“It’s almost beautiful to watch. Like a giant art installation to please our gaze.
And yet they are only there to show us we have already entered the age of adaptation.
These images are the voice for all glaciers that are disappearing around the world.”
Anne de Carbuccia

THE PRESENA GLACIER
Blue Thread is an artistic study on the cover installed over the Presena glacier to reduce its melting.
Five months a year, the Consortium of Ponte di Legno-Tonale covers the glacier, not to prevent it from melting but in the hope of slowing down its demise.

THE STORY
In July 2020, under a sweltering sun, Anne spent several days on the Presena glacier filming for her feature documentary Earth Protectors. The covered glacier had a strong visual impact on her: this new landscape brought her to the realization that she was actually physically and visually experiencing the new era that many scientists call the Anthropocene. This inspired her to create an artistic study where the protagonist is the blue thread used to sew the materials that cover the glacier.

THE BLUE THREAD
Following the blue thread through the images brings the viewer beyond the documentative physicality of the covered glacier to a visual experience through space and time. The blue thread, a symbol of adversity as well as continuity, representing both the decadent end of an era as well as the hope and the resilient capacities of our species.
